February 02, 2015

Sony plans to spend around 105 billion yen (US$886 million; US$1=118.51 yen) on capacity expansion of stacked CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) image sensors mainly used in smartphones, according to the company's press release on February 2. The investment will be used to install production facilities at Sony Semiconductor's Nagasaki Technology Center (for 78 billion yen), Yamagata Technology Center (10 billion yen), and Kumamoto Technology Center (17 billion yen). The company's total production capacity for image sensors stands at 60,000 wafers per month currently, and is expected to reach around 80,000 wafers per month by the end of June 2016.
